Broadcast Lighting and Set
“Without great lighting and interesting sets, television is just ugly radio.”
As a kid David always wanted to work in television and watching talk and magazine shows, he figured on air work was the way to go. At the same time, he began volunteering with local theatre groups and was introduced to the design and technical side.
Putting one and two together, his next step was volunteering at the local cable station where he began hosting and producing an arts and entertainment program plus helping with their set and lighting installs. This had him accepted to the Algonquin College Broadcast Program, which as he puts it, “was the only time that I couldn't wait to get to class every morning”.
Upon graduation David began working in the local industry and soon earned membership into NABET local 700 in the Lighting Director category, working in the freelance broadcast market as well as designing and “teching” for paying theatre and event projects when no shoots were scheduled.
Opportunities arose to guide his choices, and today while much of his work is in museum, live theatre and event design - he continues to bring his now formidable creative and technical skills back into the field of broadcast.
