Technical Director (contractual) (2008 - present)

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Monitors and maintains the technical assets and performs preventative maintenance and repair.

  • Makes recommendations regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.

  • Maintains and organizes theatre storage and shop area and control booth and backstage.

  • Maintains a safe and effective work environment.

  • Monitors and coordinates facility repair with theatre management.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by theatre management.

  • Analyses various scripts for technical feasibility at discretion of theatre management.

  • Determines necessary technical support in advance of various events and productions.

  • Provides on site coordination and supervision during various events and performances.

  • Supervises stage staff during various events and performances.

  • Communicates with and assists guest designers, directors and stage management as required.

  • Acts as technical consultant as required.

  • Designs, sets up, operates and maintains lighting and sound system for various productions.

  • Liaises with stage or production management for production notes on various productions.

  • Assists in recruiting, training and assignment of volunteer and paid technical staff.

  • Supervises and fabricates stage sets or production elements on various productions.

  • Maintains the venue's ability to provide for a professional and high production quality. 

Ottawa Little Theatre

Technical Lead, Production Support (contractual) (2019 – present)

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Production support as requested by the Technical Director.

  • Meet, consult and liaise with directors, designers and console operators to optimize technical elements.

  • Identify and troubleshoot technical issues pre and post production and as needed during run.

  • Assess and qualify technical volunteers for appropriate knowledge and skill sets.

  • Maintain technical resources and equipment.

  • Identify opportunities to enhance or upgrade equipment and systems to augment production quality.

Algonquin College Theatre Department

Show Supervisor  2nd year productions (contractual)  (2012 – 2016)

 Responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Act as show supervisor for public performances of 2nd year productions.

  • Observe the performances and ensure that all technical and creative parameters are maintained.

  • Provide proactive technical support on an as needed basis.

  • Ensure that all safety protocols are observed.

  • Ensure that all production specific pre and post show checks are performed.

  • Ensure that a complete post show shutdown and cleanup is performed.

  • Ensure that all students conduct themselves in a professional manner.

  • Maintain a safe working environment.

  • Provide on site coordination and supervision on an as required basis.

David Magladry Productions

Designer and Consultant  (1989 – present)

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Meet with clients to determine needs of project,service required and expectations.

  • Provide creative and technical consultation, creative conception and design.

  • Work with Project Authority, Managers and Lead Designers where applicable to ensure creative vision and technical requirements are being met.

  • Being available and proactive to client needs throughout the project.

  • Supervision of all additional personnel as supplied by this firm.

  • Formulate a critical path, project work plans, budget and timelines.

  • Determine and formulate equipment and gear lists including required quantity, unit costs, sourcing  options and ordering of equipment and supplies.

  • Liaise with other trades and personnel as required.

  • Installation including final gel and focus or supervision of client supplied crews.

  • Provision of all required paperwork.

  • Ensuring all target dates and client expectations are met.

Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (now Canadian Museum of History)

Exhibition Lighting Department Manager (contractual) (1992 -2003 )

Responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Work closely with Head of Audio Visual Department to plan and execute the lighting installation on all exhibitions throughout the museum.

  • Attend weekly production meetings with Head of Audio Visual Department.

  • Provide input on ways to improve working environment and methods.

  • Prepare and organize all required lighting gear and supplies as needed for each design.

  • Schedule and supervise all lighting installation and tear-down crew on all exhibitions.

  • Train all lighting crews regarding approved working methodology, protocol and safety.

  • Ensure all lighting crew members maintain all required safety certificates.

  • Ensure that each work environment is maintained in a safe manner.

  • Ensure safe transport of all gear to and from various exhibition halls and galleries as needed.

  • Ensure safety of all artifacts and assets at all times in the working environment as pertaining to lighting.

  • Ensure that that public and public spaces are not affected by setup or tear-down activities.

  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation and upkeep on the over 3500 pieces of exhibition lighting fixtures, effects projectors, accessories, dimming, electrical cable and supplies.

  • Ensure routine and regular maintenance and repair on all of the above as needed.

  • Maintain and organize an appropriate stock of all replacement bulbs and lighting gel.

  • Re order any and all stock required on an ongoing and advance of need basis.

  • Track exhibition bulb usage and provide monthly reports to Head of A/V Department.

  • Track specialized gear usage.

  • Provide and maintain a bi weekly museum wide exhibition re-lamping schedule.

  • Train and supervise re-lamping crews for all bi weekly duties.

  • Ensure all lighting crew pay sheets are prepared and verified.

  • Provide and provide same to payroll department.

Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation (now Canadian Museum of History)

Event and Stage Crew Manager (contractual)(2000 - 2003 )

 Responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Work closely with Special Event Department to determine all necessary technical production personnel required for all ongoing productions and special events in the 1400 person capacity Grand Hall and 500 seat theatre space.

  • Provide input on ways to improve working environment and methods.

  • Manage, schedule and supervise all technical lighting, sound and fly crews.

  • Train all crew members regarding approved working methodology, protocol and safety.

  • Ensure all crew members maintain all required safety certificates.

  • Ensure that work environment is maintained in a safe manner.

  • Ensure that all work is performed in a safe and professional manner at all times.

  • Ensure all time sheets are provided, prepared and sent to payroll department. 

Ottawa Board of Education Auditorium Rental Department

Auditorium Lighting Supervisor (part time staff) (1984 – 2001)

Responsibilities included but not limited to:

  • Liaise with rental clients in advance of show to determine crew and technical requirements.

  • Assist clients with technical matters as required.

  • Assign and manage lighting and sound crews for the eight auditoriums within the OBE school system to service the over 100 productions and events per year.

  • Ensure a constant roster of technical personnel and recruit when required.

  • Manage and supervise labour pool.

  • Maintain a safe working environment.

  • Provide on site coordination and supervision on an as required basis.

  • Manage and provide regular maintenance and repair on all stage lighting fixtures as required.

  • Ensure that all work is performed in s safe and professional manner at all times.

  • Ensure that all time sheets are provided, prepared and sent to the payroll department.
